Austrian Black Pine (Pinus nigra Austriaca) #5

About 65 cm high
Around 100 years old
training pot
From a tree which was collected in 2001 in Austria by Robert Barth

This tree I got in a trade from Robert in the summer of 2006. I wanted it because it is quite unusual for a black pine. Such trunks we know from Ponderosa pines, but not from Austrian Black Pines. It was evident that the trunk movement would be the main theme of the future bonsai. But it was unclear how exactly this could be achieved. Therefore I took a close look from all possible angles.

Fall 2006; it is very diffilult to decide about the right angle.

Fall 2007; now is the time for a serious first styling. First the old needles are plucked. This could not be done in the years before because the pine was weak. Now it shows signs of strength.

Fall 2007; the probable front is decided now. With big clamps the trunk becomes more compact.

Fall 2007; before serious bending.
Fall 2007; I cut a deep groove into the branch to make it ready for drastic bending.

Fall 2007; a very drastic bend is now possible without endangering the branch too much.
Fall 2007; then the rest of the trees is wired and the branches are put into position. Black pines look untidy and bad after firsts styling usually. This is fine. All that counts is the future look.

Fall 2007; it is hard to imagine that this will be a good bonsai in only two years. We'll see!
