Austrian Black Pine (Pinus nigra Austriaca) #3

About 65 cm high
Around 100 years old
From a tree which was collected in 2001 in Austria by Uli Ernst

This Austrian black pine was collected by Uli Ernst in Austria in 2001. It found it's way into my garden in spring of 2004. At that time it was huge, with an enormous crown. I decided to use it for a demonstration at the big German convention in Ratingen 2004. Afterwards it appeared a lot more tamed. In spring of 2005 it was taken out of the way too large and ugly plastic tub. We used a round Korean pot which was a bit too large because that's what we found. The wire was removed in spring of 2007. In August 2008 it was decided to do a second styling. All old needles were plucked, the foliage edited slightly and copper wire was applied. Now it looks like it will become a very good black pine one day. The nebari is really outstanding. The Korean pot was still a bit too large, although the tree has gained in girth considerably. At last it was potted into this great container by Gordon Duffet in April 2010.

Fall 2003; the tree is in the garden of Uli Ernst still.
Spring 2004; Here one can see the potential of this pine. It is all in the trunk and not in the crown.
spring 2004; the pin looks very immature. The crown is far to big, of course. It makes the trunk look weak.
Spring 2004; this picutre was taken a few days before the first styling.
Spring 2004; the demonstration is almost finished.
Spring 2004; this could be a front. But at this point in time it is not necessary to make a decision about that.
Spring 2004; the size comparison with David shows that it is bigger that one thinks. The diameter of the trunk a bit above ground level is 15 cm.

Spring 2004; At the big German convention in Ratingen in 2004 this pine was styled for the first time. Here the result.
Spring 2005; a year later it looks fine.
Spring 2005; twelve months after fists styling one can dare a repotting. I tried to not disturb the roots as far as possible. The pine looks a lot better in this pot, of course. It is a bit too large, still a training pot. It is round because the front is not yet decided, although it could well be this one.
