European larch (Larix decidua) #12

60 cm high
Around 70 years old
Pot from Czechia
from a tree colleced in Italy in 1994

I have had this twin larch for quite a while. I was not so fond of it and put a price tag on it. For some reason noone wanted to buy it. So I finally decided to restyle it. The concept was to make it look like a very old twin larch in the mountains - to get out the ordinary bonsai look. I showed my styling on the internet and got some praise and some expected nasty remarks from bonsai fundamentalists. Anyway, it is a good example of the naturalistic style. The test is whether the final design would look alright in a natural seting. If it is a typical bonsai it would not look good. Some virtuals were made that showed that. For my taste the kind of odd broken pot fits the design quite well. I am happy about it now and it certainly is not for sale.

Spring 2003; it looks like a typical bonsai.
Spring 2005; the removal of the wires does not help it much.
Spring 2005; now it looks like a very old larch in the mountains. Or rather it will look like one as it matures.

This looks convincing to me.
